MADRID
The city’s legendary
nightlife is among the best in
Europe. But the capital city of
Spain also boasts cultural
institutions of worldwide
importance, like the Prado
Museum, a real treasure chest of
art.
TOLEDO
is located in Castilla-La
Mancha, best known as the home
of Don Quixote, and it is one of
Spain´s most fascinating cities.
For centuries it was one of
Spain’s most important early
capitals. Until 1492,
Christians, Jews and Muslims
coexisted peaceably here. Its
unique architectural
combinations, with Arabic
influences everywhere, are a
strong reminder of Spain’s mixed
heritage.
GRANADA
The Alhambra
palace-fortress, dominating the
Granada skyline from its hilltop
perch, and the fascinating
Albayzín, Granada’s old Islamic
quarter, also rising above the
modern city, are highlights of a
visit to Spain. With the large
and vibrant Spanish and
international student
population, Granada boasts a
buzzing cultural life, excellent
bars and a hopping nightlife.
Its setting, with the often
snow-clad Sierra Nevada as
backdrop, is magnificent, and
its greenness a delight in
often-parched Andalucía.
CORDOBA
The magnificence of Arabian
civilization reached one of its
highest peaks in Cordoba, for
centuries the capital of a
caliphate that had influence
even farther north than tiny
Andalusia.
SEVILLA
Bullrings, tapas, football,
narrow old-town streets,
flamenco, imposing Christian
monuments and
dance-till-you-drop nightlife.
The Gothic cathedral,
technically the largest in the
world, is topped by the
emblematic Giralda tower; it’s
Andalucía’s finest Christian
building. The nearby Mudéjar
Alcázar is another major
highlight.
LAGOS
This tourist resort has some
of the Algarve’s finest beaches.
LISBON
Although it has the crowds,
noise and traffic of a capital
city, Lisbon’s low skyline and
breezy position beside the Rio
Tajo (River Tagus) lend it a
small, manageable feel. Its
unpretentious atmosphere,
pleasant blend of architectural
styles and diverse attractions
appeal to a wide range of
visitors. Furthermore Lisbon is
one of Europe’s most economical
destinations.
SALAMANCA
The compact and ancient city
of Salamanca is considered a
must on any Castilian itinerary.
The beauty of its historical
university and churches is
without equal in Spain, which is
partly what draws throngs of
young people from around the
world here to study Spanish… and
to party.
